Matthew P. Jaffe began his legal career at the U.S. Senate. He first worked as staff counsel to a select committee analyzing law enforcement undercover operations (“Abscam”), then became special counsel to the Senate Rules Committee regarding a dispute before the ILO. After completing his Senate staff assignment, Matthew became a staff attorney first with the U.S. International Trade Commission, then with the U.S. Commerce Department, before entering private practice.

In international trade, Matthew has participated in multiple antidumping/countervailing duty cases. He has helped U.S. chemical producers and U.S. hand truck manufacturers in petitioning for trade remedies. He has also helped a U.S. white good producer, a Japanese/U.S. bearing producer, and Mexican tomato growers in defending against trade remedy actions. Matthew has participated in section 301 and section 337 cases, and appeared before two GATT Panels and a Binational Panel under the U.S.-Canada Free-Trade Agreement. Finally, Matthew has worked on issues involving U.S. customs law and export regulations.

In the product risk management area, Matthew works on issues concerning regulatory initiatives involving chemicals, specifically in the areas of nanotechnology and green chemistry. He is one of the founders of the GoodNanoGuide, an Internet platform designed to enhance the ability of experts to exchange ideas on how best to handle nanomaterials in an occupational setting.
