Matthew G. Shaw practices Customs law in the firm's New York City office. He represents multinational corporations and international traders on customs duty savings maximization and risk minimization opportunities in all facets of their business dealings. He was formerly a Principal with the Customs and International Trade practice of a "Big Four" accounting firm.

An attorney and licensed customs broker, Mr. Shaw is active in duty savings projects, such as 'first sale' planning; customs compliance projects dealing with tariff classification, merchandise valuation, focused assessments, North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) verifications and country of origin; and internal controls analyses and implementation to manage risks effectively. He supervises and conducts internal customs compliance reviews for international traders under the protection of attorney-client privilege to help clients choose the most effective corrective action and ensure maximum protection under the law. He is also active with the C-TPAT (Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism) program for supply chain security, and the ISA (Importer Self Assessment) program administered by Customs for corporate self-governance. Mr. Shaw prepares and represents firms in Customs audits and other government verifications. He has served clients in various industries, including mass retail, petroleum, textiles, apparel, beverages, foodstuffs, footwear, automotive, agriculture, consumer electronics and aviation.

Mr. Shaw co-authored The Import Handbook, published by John Wiley & Sons; Latin American Development Strategies: Opportunities for U.S. Exports, and was most recently published in the National Law Journal ("Importers Ignore Customs Obligations at their Peril," Nov. 28, 2005). He has been an Adjunct Professor at New York University, and a lecturer at customs and trade conferences – including The World Trade Institutes in New York and Baltimore. Mr. Shaw has also been a member of the International Law and Practice Section of the New York State Bar Association, the Customs and International Trade Bar Association, and the American Association of Exporters and Importers. He is admitted to the United States Court of International Trade and the United States District Courts of New York and New Jersey.
